Theory of Planned Behaviour Literature Review Notes
From Intentions to Actions: A Theory of Planned Behaviour (Ajzen 1985)
Human social behaviour is goal directed and demonstrated in new formulated plans
Certain sequences of action can become so habitual it's performed automatically- highly
developed skills of this nature typically no longer require conscious formulation of a behavior
plan
Some parts of the plan are more routine than others- despite this, this still establishes the
existence of behavioral intention because without an explicit or implicit plan to guide- nothing
would take place
The Theory of Planned Behaviour: Reactions and Reflections (Ajzen,2011)
Prototype Similarity Vs. Intention
The theory of planned behaviour became one of the most frequently cited and influential
models for prediction of human behaviour
As time passes an increasing number of intervening events can change people's behavioral
normative or control beliefs, modify attitudes, subjective norms or perceptions of control- thus
generating revised intentions
These changes reduce predictive validity
Intentions are sometimes found to be poor predictors of behavior
When people find themselves in situations in which they are encouraged to do certain
behaviors, especially risky ones- it's their willingness to do them rather than intention that help
engage in these behaviors
- Their willingness is determined by the extent to which they view themselves as a person who
would stereotypically perform these acts- if they relate to this stereotype
Rivis et al. 2011; Addressed whether including perceived similarity in the theory of planned
behavior would improve behavioral prediction
- Data showed that perceived prototype similarity significantly improved prediction of
behaviour above predictive validity of intentions
Affect and Emotions
Neglected in the TPB, own moods can have effects on our beliefs, people in negative moods
tend to judge events less favourably
Theory of Planned Behaviour (Ajzen, 1991)
Past Behaviour
Prior behavior has an impact on later behavior independent of the effect of other variables;
Intention, attitudes, norms and beliefs
Repeated performance leads to the formation of a habit, then behavior becomes a habitual
without involvement of previously aforementioned variables
Past behavior is better explained as a reflection of all factors and not habit
