Assignment 41:
1. Participants:
Participant A:
A.1 Brief description of participant:
In this research report, Participant A will be named Pretty due to
confidentiality. Pretty is 33 years old and lives in Jozini area in KwaZulu-Natal.
She is married with 2 children, aged 11 and 15. Pretty is a chartered
accountant who was previously employed in a corporate organization. She
has been volunteering since she was young but has been doing full-time
volunteering for 10 years for this organization as her children were at school
so she had more hours in her day to help volunteer. She volunteers at an old
age home which is 15 minutes from her house and has many duties, such
caring for the elderly in terms of organizing their schedules from doctors’
appointments to bingo evenings, and she also helps raise funds for the
organization. She basically helps run the organization and makes sure that
everyone’s needs are taken care of.

A.2 Transcribed Interview:
Hlengiwe: Hello, my name is Hlengiwe Nyawo and I am currently doing my

people do volunteer work. Would you be comfortable for me to interview you
and for this interview to be used for research purposes for my research
project?
Pretty: Yes, I give my consent
Hlengiwe: Moreover, this interview will be recorded, and it can take up to 1
hour. Do you have the time today?
Pretty: Well, I can give my time… just for you to get done for your research
Hlengiwe: Confidentiality will be reserved and you, along with the
organization, will remain unidentified throughout the research. Please sign this
consent form and so that we can proceed with the interview:
Pretty: Ok. (Pretty signs). Thank you
Hlengiwe: Thank you so much.

ASSIGNMENT 02

Hlengiwe: Pretty, I am going to ask you some few personal questions just to
have better idea of who I am interviewing. Where were you born?
Pretty: I was born in Jozini (KZN)
Hlengiwe: How old are you? This question is optional, if you are feeling
uncomfortable with this question, you have a right not to answer it.
Pretty: Mmmh what a question! (Pretty Giggles is chuckling out louder). I am
33 years old.
Hlengiwe: Thanks for being brave enough to answer this question. I’m sorry
about that question. Are you married, single or divorced?
Pretty: I am matrimonial. It been 12 years now.
Hlengiwe: Wow! That is very meritorious. Does your husband support your
career choice?
Pretty: Yes, he does. He is very supportive. He is the one who encouraged
me to start volunteering as I was folding arms, doing anything at the time, and
I really thank God for my husband, because is so generous and that was the
best decision I could have made.
Hlengiwe: What do your family or friends say about your volunteering? Do
they encourage you?
Pretty: Yes, they real do. I have a lot of friends who do volunteer work also,
which is nice as I always have someone to speak to about the nature of work I
do. I am very lucky to be able to volunteer as my husband is the primary
breadwinner.
Hlengiwe: We are lucky to have people like you. Do you have children? If so,
how old are they? Do they still live with you?
Pretty: Yes! I have one cute angel…she will be turning eight years on 13th of
June.
Hlengiwe: Did you volunteer before you had a child?
Pretty: Yes- I volunteered for a long time before I have a child but the free
time, I have now has allowed me to carry on volunteering a lot more than
before I had a child
Hlengiwe: What school did you attend? Was it religious?
