, ‘The purpose of productivity standard analysis is to determine how all departments in the organization are
performing compared to best practice of a similar organization in size and service diversity.’ The standard is
made to set the highest productivity level a department should be able to achieve. (Andrews, 2007, p. 116)

A performance standard is an expression of the performance level that must be met at a certain level of
performance in a department. It is the work performance in terms of quality and quantity that is expected from
every employee. The employees have to meet the productivity standards (see above).

These two standards are sometimes interchangeable, but there is a difference between the
productivity- and the performance standards: Productivity standards can be measured of the
efficiency of production and the performance standard is set by the way somebody accomplishes
something successfully. If the performance of an employee is right, the productivity can be increased.
(Nicholls, n.d.)

It is important to implement productivity and performance standards in a Housekeeping department.
One of the reasons that the rooms have to be cleaned in a short time-period is because the costs of
the housekeeping department are quite high because of the salaries of the housekeepers.
Sometimes a guest checks-out from his room, while a new check-in arrives a short period later. Then
de room has to be perfectly clean again, so the housekeeper should work very fast. (Productivity
Standard Analysis, 2011)

When the housekeepers have a certain performance standard they should be able to work faster. If
the best method of cleaning is known by the housekeeper, he should be able to clean as fast as
possible to reach the productivity standard of the hotel. If there are no standards available, every
housekeeper will keep another way of working, which could provide a lower productivity because he
could forgot certain steps while cleaning. According to different sources, a standard productivity level
is 20 – 30 minutes per room. It also depends on the size of the room, and for example if there were
extra beds in the room. Carribean Inn also counts in the fact that VIP rooms have to get extra
attention. The rooms get extra services, the minibar get filled with extra items for example, which of
course takes some extra time for the housekeeper. Bilkent Hotel is a five star rated Hotel in Ankara,
Turkey. Bilkent’s model shows that housekeepers have approximately 27 minutes per room to clean:
