, 1.1 General introduction and problem formulation and rationale

All social work takes place to some extent within communities (Teater, 2014: 13).
Community work is used by many social workers as a social work method because
the nature of the social work profession involves working with communities and
these communities provide the context, if not always the content; of social work
practice (Hardcastle, 2011: 3). Social workers have varying experiences of rendering
social welfare services online and they experience both the successes and the
challenges. The research brings to light those experiences, successes and
challenges that seem to be typical of those social workers who render social welfare
services online.

It is of utmost importance to bring to the fore the experiences, successes and
challenges of those who render social welfare services online so that we can know
what works, how to improve and help each other, because community work is vital to
social work.According to Hardcastle (2011: 1): .The ecological perspective of social
workers is about community." This show how important community work is to the
social work profession, hence the need to know the experiences, successes and
challenge of those rendering social welfare services online. Among other things,
community work is understood as a set of approaches aimed at understanding
individuals as part of a community and building the capacity of that community to
solve the social, economic or political challenges faced by its members (Healy cited
in Teater, 2014: 13)

There is a wide range of literature by Hardin (2013: 196) discusses the
achievements of community work, which are at many levels, especially in community
campaigns. Gamble & Weil (2010: 10) looked at how social workers should practice
community work and set out the skills that are effective in community work. Rather
(Schenck, Nel & Louw, 2010; Healy, 2012; and Teater, 2014), but this mainly refers
to community practice or work as a method of social work. Schenck, et al, (2010 44)
foregrounds how to do participatory community work and provides guidance on how
to do community work using a people-centred approach. Healy, (2012: 4) discusses
community work as a method of social work and the skills required to work with
communities to create change.
