Centraal staan de ontregelingen van de
grondstemming in sombere zin en
euforisch of dysforisch (prikkelbaar).
Bipolaire stoornis wordt gekenmerkt
door 1 of meerdere (hypo)manische
episodes, afgewisseld met depressieve
episodes. 1.9% heeft de ziekte, zelfde
bij mannen en vrouwen en begint rond
30 jaar.
Zoals op de afbeelding zie je dat er een
onderscheid is tussen verschillende
vormen.
In de manische episode is de stemming abnormaal verhoogd of prikkelbaar met expansief gedrag
gedurende minstens 1 week. Andere symptomen:
- Grootheidsideeën - Spraakzaamheid
- Verminderde behoefte aan slaap - Verhoogde afleidbaarheid
- Toename aan storend gedrag
Beloop
Eenmalige episodes komen nauwelijks voor. Bij 2/3 de gaat het over geïsoleerde ziektebeelden en 1/3 de
heeft tussen het hypo(manische) en depressieve fasen nog rest- of residuele symptomen. Als er
minstens 4 stemmingsepisodes hebben voorgedaan in het afgelopen jaar, spreekt men van rapid
cycling.
De gemiddelde manie duurt 2 weken, de depressie 3 maanden.
