-: Undertake Titration And
Colorimetry To Determine
the Concentration of
Solutions:-

For creating 0.05 mole of sodium carbonate firstly it must be
calculated how many moles of sodium carbonate are needed to
make 250cm3 of a 0.05m/dm3 solution.

Equipment list:
The equipment which is included in preparing this solution is as
follows,
➢ Gloves
➢ Sodium carbonate (Na2CO3)
➢ Weigh boat
➢ Electric balance
➢ Safety goggles
➢ 250ml Beaker
➢ A conical flask
➢ Distilled water
➢ Stirrer
➢ Funnel
➢ Watch glass

, ➢ Wash bottle
➢ Stirrer

Method:
❖ At first take a plastic weigh boat and ensure it is cleaned. If not
clean it with tissue paper.
❖ Take a weighing boat and add some amount of sodium
carbonate into it should be 1.35g.
❖ Use an electric balance to weigh the amount of sodium
carbonate. But make sure that an empty weigh boat is placed
first onto the balance and tared to zero to get an accurate
amount of sodium carbonate into it. We will have 1.35g of
sodium carbonate.
❖ Then put 1.35g of Na2CO3 into the watch glass. As the molar
mass of sodium carbonate is 106g and its molarity is 1.325g.
❖ After having the amount of 1.35g of sodium carbonate add it to
the beaker. Add 150cm3 of distilled water to the beaker.
conical flask using a funnel be careful if there is a little bit left in
the funnel just use distilled water to clean the funnel
completely and add the full amount of sodium carbonate in it.
❖ After adding sodium carbonate, add some distilled water into
the flask and stir until the whole sodium carbonate is dissolved.
❖ Then add water and keep adding until the water reaches the
line marked onto the flask. Make sure that the meniscus of the
water touches the line. The bottom curve of the meniscus must
be attached to the line.
❖ As shown in the following diagram,

Risk assessment:
There are different types of risks while doing these types of
practical so we have to be careful and have to assess these risks.
Some of them are as follows,

, • While preparing this solution lab coat should be used.
• Funnel should be washed many times before using it.
• Shaking the solution while dissolving be done carefully. The
conical can break while shaking harder.
• While checking the reading the meniscus flask should be held in
the front of your eye not by holding it above your eyes it may
be dangerous as it can fall.

Calculations:
The calculation for the standard solution of sodium carbonate is,
Mass no. of Na = 23, Mass no. of C = 12, Mass no. of O = 16
Na2CO3 = 23(2) + 12 + 16(3) = 106g
