Unit 20 – Understanding mental wellbeing (part 1)
LEARNING AIM A: UNDERSTAND DIFFERENT VIEWS ON THE NATURE OF MENTAL WELLBEING AND
MENTAL HEALTH
World Health Organisation definition of ‘mental health’ : A vital and crucial part of being healthy is
having good mental health. According to the founding document of the World Health Organisation,
"health is a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being and not merely the absence of
disease or infirmity." This term has a crucial implication: mental health encompasses more than
simply the absence of mental diseases or impairments.
A person is in a mentally healthy condition when they are aware of their own skills, able to handle
life's typical challenges, able to work efficiently, and able to give back to their community.
The capacity of both individuals and society as a whole to think, feel, interact, work, and enjoy life
depends on mental health. On this premise, it is possible to see the promotion, preservation, and
recovery of mental health as a crucial concern for people, communities, and societies all over the
globe.
Faculty of public health definition of ‘mental well-being’ : The art and science of enhancing mental
health and wellness and avoiding mental disease via coordinated efforts and well-informed decisions
made by society, companies, private as well as public communities, and people is known as public
mental health.
Public health depends on mental health, and the standard of life and the ability to handle the
challenges that life brings both greatly depend on mental wellbeing. Physical disease, social injustice,
and bad habits are all protected from it. There are currently many evidence-based strategies for
enhancing mental health and avoiding mental disease, and they are expanding every day.
What is mental capital and how does it link with mental well-being : Mental capital is compared to
financial stock, which may be developed and amassed over the course of a lifetime but also changes
with time in a trajectory-like manner. The best and wisest use of the capital is made possible by
mental health, preventing its depletion.
A.P1/M1 Analyse factors that influence mental wellbeing and mental health with reference to a
view on the nature of mental wellbeing and mental health.
, & The positive and negative impact on an individual’s mental health and well-being for each of the
three
Environmental factors endowment and experiences - Low income causes poverty, which frequently
results in subpar housing conditions, which might be quite dangerous. A setting that is too crowded
might cause sadness and stress-related anxiety problems. In addition to housing, our environment is
quite significant. A tough environment, like the neighbourhood, may have a devastating effect on
young minds in particular. It's psychosis, which frequently affects us. The environment you stay in
and are surrounded by can have an influence on this problem as can substance abuse. These
individuals are more probable to experience an assault. If a young child grows up in an environment
where there is crime and violence, they may commit suicide more frequently if they experience a
depressed period in their lives. Most people either don't know they have a mental disorder, reject it,
or put off getting care.
Socio-economic factor – unemployment rate, poverty rate There are several aspects related to the
housing situations at construction sites. These are a few of the factors that play a role. These
disorders are an illustration of mental health since they are more prevalent overall. A person in a
poor socioeconomic position may struggle with their mental health since they confront more
obstacles than someone in a better class and worry more about the future. They frequently worry
about the ability to handle financial hardships in the event of an emergency. These circumstances
may cause tension in people. Pressure from both job and family obligations might result in an
undiagnosed level of stress. It frequently has a negative impact on a person in the form of fatigue
depression. The degree of strain we are under as a result of home responsibilities is the second often
cited factor. These obligations might occasionally be modest, such as taking care of the necessities or
making strict budgets. This includes a wide range of various working-class organisations.
Psychological factors - These problems can become serious in some circumstances, such as when a
kid witnesses abuse from an early age and may suffer for the rest of their lives. A psychological
trauma can result in a few things that are extremely dangerous to life. The next can happen by either
physical or emotional means, or occasionally both. Inadequacy sentiments may result from this.
Many young children have negative effects as a result of the events they have witnessed or
participated in. These eventually result in their torturing themselves or slowly dying themselves by
punishing themselves. They employ a few strategies to deal with these mental health problems.
Abuse of the sexual and psychological nature is more prevalent among the younger age. A youngster
who has been sexually assaulted was either not aware of what was happening or was pushed. They
may always carry this as a negative recollection. As a result, individuals may experience panic attacks
and anxiety while around strangers or if they run into the abuser. Many sexually abused people try
to avoid interacting with others. Physical abuse can also be caused by the death of a parent or a
partner. As their spouse or parent no longer exists, the person may feel excluded or like they have
no reason to continue living. Bonding is a vital aspect of love.
What is The Dual Axis Model? – A dual axis chart makes use of two axes to clearly show the
connections between two variables of various magnitudes and measurement scales. Correlation is
the term used to describe the connection between two independent variables. A dual axis chart
shows a lot of data in a little amount of area, allowing you to spot trends you would have missed
