What is a forensic investigation?

This kind of investigation uses the scientific approach or another skill,
such as accounting or valuation knowledge, and looks backward to reach
a decision about something that happened in the past.[1] Photographs are
used by investigators to record crime scenes. To document the event,
they capture measurements and take images. They also gather forensic
evidence and uphold the correct chain of custody for that evidence. The
evidence that detectives gather at crime scenes includes fingerprints, tyre
prints, hairs, fibres, blood, and other bodily fluids.[2]

How are crime scenes investigated?

The samples that might be taken at a crime scene

A variety of objects could be considered essential physical evidence for
gathering and investigation:[3]
 Biological evidence (hair, blood, saliva…)
 Latent print (footprint, palm print, fingerprints…)
 Tool and tool mark
 Firearm
 Digital evidence (cell phone records, email messages, internet
logs…)
 Footwear and tire track
 Drugs
 Trace evidence (soil, glass fragments, fibres…)
