Introspection: Process a person gains knowledge of their own mental and
emotional states by observing conscious thoughts + feelings - intensity, quality and
duration.
Empiricism: Belief all knowledge is derived from sensory experience characterised
by the use of scientific method.
Scientific Method: Use of investigative methods that are objective, systematic and
replicable → formulation, testing and modification of hypotheses.
Controlled observation: The degree of control necessary to establish causal
relationship by manipulation of IV and measurement of DV.
Objectivity: When the researcher doesn’t impose their own ideas, beliefs or
expectations when interpreting results of research
Testing theoretical predictions: Theories are used to create hypotheses that can
be tested by experiments and other methods.
Replicability: Procedure used and findings obtained need to be repeatable.
Falsifiability: Popper (1969) science = we seek to find evidence to disprove a
theory. Only accept a theory when it can be disproved.
Paradigm: Kuhn (1962) science should have a unified set of assumptions and
methods.
