Hands-On Activity Tips and Solutions for Chapter 1
Activity 1-1
This project is meant to be a visual experience for your students and to create an awareness of the
prevalence of computer and networking devices. It is important for students to get a firsthand view of
computer and networking devices, and this assignment is intended to provide an introduction to the
devices in a fun way. Although many people use computer and networking technology, large numbers
may have never seen certain types of devices or realized how many exist in a single organization.

It may be necessary to schedule in advance the viewing of some parts of the enterprise network
because of access restrictions that apply to certain areas.

It may be helpful to have the local network administrator available to demonstrate how a device is
connected to the network and what function the device performs. It may also be helpful to ask the

2

,students to create a rudimentary (perhaps hand-drawn) diagram that shows how each of the different
devices is interconnected on the network (depending on the size of the network).

This project will also help students to begin to understand why it is important to not only know the
locations of network devices but also be able to document a network to help troubleshoot problems and
address future design needs.

Activity 1-2
Encourage your students to learn about the history of networking by examining Web sites and other
resources. Consider presenting information you have found about the history of networking. Consider
making a slide presentation to illustrate what you cover in the discussion.

The answers for Step 3 are:
a. The Network Working Group (NWG) was started with Steve Crocker as its head in 1968 for the
purpose of developing host protocols to use on ARPANET.
b. First Internet Bank of Indiana.
c. 1969.
d. Queen Elizabeth II sent an e-mail.
e. 1993.
f. Implementation of the name server meant that users did not have to know the precise path to other
systems for network communications.
g. Network Voice Protocol.
h. NASA tested the first deep space communications network.
i. In 2007 Estonia offered the first online national parliamentary elections.

In Step 5, the first computer to use all diode logic was the Standards Eastern Automatic Computer
(SEAC).

In Step 6, the first commercial packet-switching network was called Telenet, which connected
customers in seven cities.

In Step 7, the Hypertext Markup Language was developed by Tim Berner-Lee.

In Step 8, Citizens and Southern National Bank installed the first automatic teller machine (ATM).

Activity 1-3

In this project, students learn where to configure ICS in Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008/Server
2008 R2. When students complete this project, consider holding a class discussion about the merits of
using ICS, particularly in terms of network security and the efficiency of access to the Internet. For
instance, when the host ICS gateway computer is busy, this can slow Internet access for clients. Also,
if the host ICS computer is turned off, then users cannot access the Internet.

Activity 1-4

This project enables students to learn where to configure Internet Sharing in Mac OS X Snow Leopard
or Lion. Students will need an account with Administrator privileges.

Consider having a discussion about the pros and cons of sharing an Internet connection, including the
cost savings and additional security concerns. You might have a class discussion about using this
option in a business setting compared to a home or home office setting.

3

, Activity 1-5
For this project, students use the Internet to find examples of appliances that can be connected to and
accessed via a home network. If the URL is not changed, one source of information can be found at
<URL><ITAL>www.hometoys.com/htinews/aug99/articles/homs/jones.htm</ITAL></URL>, which
dates back to 1999, but still contains interesting information.

Some examples of appliances that can be connected and managed include the following:
▪ Heating systems
▪ Cooling systems
▪ Lighting systems
▪ Home entertainment systems
▪ Fans
▪ Garage doors
▪ Watering systems
▪ Greenhouses
▪ Refrigerators
▪ Microwaves
▪ Stoves
▪ Coffee makers
▪ Bread makers
▪ Telephones

Activity 1-6
It is important and helpful for the student to understand and view the physical connection of the LAN
to the WAN. It may be necessary to schedule a tour in advance or to have all of the students tour at the
same time. Access to the location where the LAN and WAN interconnection is made may have strict
security measures imposed because of the sensitive nature of the equipment present and regulatory
requirements.

Detailed questions are important; additional questions include the following:

▪ What types of physical media (cable or radio/microwaves) are used to make the connections?
▪ What types of physical interfaces are used to make the connections?
▪ What vendor or vendors are used for the devices making the connections (for future reference in
contacting the vendor for additional information)?
▪ What regional carrier is used for WAN connectivity, if applicable?

Contact with the network administrator is important so you can learn how the network functions within
her or his organization’s computing enterprise.

Activity 1-7
In Step 4, students should record the types of connections that can be configured in Windows 7 or
Server 2008/Server 2008 R2 (the options will vary depending on the operating system and NIC or
WNIC installed in the computer). In Step 4 the types of connections include the following:
▪ Connect to the Internet
▪ Set up a new network
▪ Manually connect to a wireless network
▪ Connect to a workplace
▪ Set up a dial-up connection
▪ Set up a wireless computer ad hoc (computer-to-computer) network
