, Coping with dental treatment

For a number of reasons, children may be anxious about dental treatment, and find it
difficult to cope with. Often, children are labelled as 'uncooperative'. This term has a
negative connotation, and implies the child is being deliberately difficult or obstructive.
This is rarely the case.

We need to consider the reasons why a child may find it difficult to cope with dental
treatment, and try and manage these appropriately. Children are not just small adults,
and the approach to their dental treatment needs to be specific to each child. The child
often has not decided they want to attend the dentist, and there are many other things
they would rather be doing. Many children cannot see past this. Children also find it
difficult to express their fear and anxiety, and may also have difficulty communicating
these. They may be shy or timid, and also have limited coping skills. Furthermore, many
children simply don't know how to behave at the dentist, because they have never
experienced it before.

Often when a child is anxious, doesnt know what to do, or feels like they cannot cope -
behaviour is a reaction to these feelings, rather than the situation itself.

We should:
1. Understand why a child might be anxious
2. Identify their level of cooperation
a. Co-operative
b. Potentially co-operative
c. Lacking co-operative ability (pre-cooperative)
3. Utilise appropriate behaviour management strategies

An understanding of child development is crucial, as even child of the same age will vary
greatly, depending on a number of factors such as:
Maturity
Life experiences
Siblings
Age
Confidence
Communication ability
