, TRIGONOMETRY
Trigonometry is a branch of mathematics concerned with relationships between angles
and ratios of lengths. The first trigonometric table was apparently formed by Hipparchus,
who is consequently now known as “the father of trigonometry".
TRIGONOMETRIC RATIOS/FUNCTION
Hipparchus (c. 190–120 bce) was the first to construct a table of values for a
trigonometric function.
Trigonometric ratios help in finding the angles and missing sides of a triangle. It is used in
various fields like engineering, chemistry, marine and biology.
THE SIX TRIGONOMETRIC RATIOS
The six trigonometric ratios are sine (sin), cosine (cos), tangent (tan), cotangent (cot),
cosecant (cosec), and secant (sec).
SINE (sin)
The trigonometric function that is equal to the ratio of the side opposite a given angle (in
a right triangle) to the hypotenuse.
COSINE (cos)
The trigonometric function that is equal to the ratio of the side adjacent to an acute angle
(in a right-angled triangle) to the hypotenuse.
TANGENT (tan)
The length of the side
opposite the angle divided by
the length of the adjacent
side.
COTANGENT (cot)
(in a right-angled triangle) the
ratio of the side (other than
the hypotenuse) adjacent to
a particular acute angle to the
side opposite the angle.
COSECANT(cosec)
a trigonometric function that for an acute angle is the ratio between the hypotenuse of a
right triangle of which the angle is considered part and the leg opposite the angle.
SECANT(sec)
It is the ratio of the
hypotenuse to the side
adjacent to a given angle in
a right triangle.
DISCUSSION
In finding for the Six Trigonometric Ratios, we can follow these steps:
First, identify the name of the point, angle or whole triangle given.
Afterwards, take down the given values on the problem.
