Personen

1) Konrad Adenauer (1876-1967)
Christendemocratische politicus, de eerste democratisch gekozen bondskanselier
van de BRD (1949-1963). Adenauer richtte zich in de jaren 50 op de
economische wederopbouw van West-Duitsland. In zijn buitenlandpolitiek
realiseerde hij een snelle integratie van de BRD binnen de westerse invloedssfeer
en de Europese Gemeenschap. Hij gold als fel tegenstander van het
communisme en de Sovjet-Unie. De BRD zag hij als de enige legitieme
vertegenwoordiger van het gehele Duitse volk. Hij erkende de DDR niet als
staat.

2) Jozef Stalin (1878-1953)
Leider van de Communistische Partij van de Sovjet-Unie (1928-1953). Hij
ontwikkelde zich tot een meedogenloze alleenheerser in een totalitair systeem.
In de Tweede Wereldoorlog breidde hij de invloedssfeer van de Sovjet-Unie ver
uit. Hij hielp in de DDR een volksdemocratie aan de macht.

3) Adolf Hitler (1889-1945)
Rijkskanselier van Duitsland (1933-1945) (vanaf 1934 Führer, ‘leider’). Uit
frustratie over de Duitse nederlaag tijdens de Eerste Wereldoorlog werd de jonge
Hitler lid (en vanaf 1921 partijleider) van de fel nationalistische Duitse
Arbeiderspartij (later NSDAP). In de crisisjaren kreeg hij veel Duitsers achter
zich, waardoor hij in 1933 rijkskanselier kon worden. Hij schafte de democratie
af, ontwikkelde zich tot een gewelddadige dictator en begon een nieuwe
wereldoorlog. Hij bleef populair door successen in binnen- en buitenland (de
bestrijding van de werkloosheid, het ongedaan maken van het Verdrag van
Versailles). Uiteindelijk pleegde hij zelfmoord.

4) Walter Ulbricht (1893-1973)
Voorzitter van de communistische partij van de DDR en daarmee feitelijk het
DDR-staatshoofd (1950-1971). Ulbricht volgde een Moskougetrouwe lijn. Onder
hem werd de DDR een communistische dictatuur naar model van de Sovjet-Unie.
Hij onderdrukte een volksopstand in 1953 en gaf in samenspraak met de
Sovjet-Unie het bevel tot de bouw van de Berlijnse Muur in 1961.

5) Erich Honecker (1912-1994)
Leider van de DDR (vanaf 1971) tot enige weken voor de val van de Berlijnse
Muur in 1989. Hij keerde zich tegen de hervormingen van Gorbatsjov. In 1989
vroeg hij de Sovjet-Unie hulp om de grote opstanden in Oost-Duitsland neer te
slaan, maar Gorbatsjov weigerde. Kort daarna dwong de communistische partij
hem tot aftreden en begon zij met hervormingen.
