Skills log book

In order to efficiently complete unit 2 practical, I conducted numerous experiments and self-studied
a lot of the procedures. The skills learnt improve my confidence and functionality which will be
useful when I apply to higher level institution later in my life. While learning practice techniques can
the complex and tiresome but I did not regret as the skills that I obtained from it will be immersible
in the future. The practical’s I completed are the colorimetry, making a standard solution, titration
and chromatography. I made uses of the knowledge I know prior to the practical to safely conduct
the experiment but there was some skill I learned along the way which helps me accurately and
autonomously complete the task quicker and easier. The main skill that I developed is

 Scrutiny: this can also be referred to as observation. it is personal skill that I developed
when I wanted my teacher demonstrate how to perform the experiment and that the safety
use each of the equipment need in the experiment. For example, I had no idea that you are
supposed to calibrate the equipment first before using it or that you can use a burette
instead to measure the volume instead of using a pipette.
 Communication: to ensure that the experiment is done in in a proper order and with
accurate results obtain communication is important. If you don’t understand how the
experiment is done or have doubt about the results of the experiment then it is important to
note that communicating with you teacher is essential as they will guide you on how to
complete the practical. Alternatively, if in a circumstance that the teacher is not presence or
busy, you can communicate with other student who may know what to do and get the idea
on how to do yours.
 Critical analysis: having critical analysis is important as it focus on how you got the result,
why you got the result, the steps taken to improve the results, etc. critical analysis is an
important skill to learn regardless of any field you land on and is highly value. When doing
the experiment, I was able to accurately interpret what went wrong and what techniques I
could have improved in order to obtain a better result.

the skills that I have learnt, such as comprehension of danger, how to use the equipment, the
advantages and disadvantage of the method used or the practical itself, compiling and
presenting data, interpreting and analysis parts of the experiment to draw an conclusion can be
used exponentially in future experiment. I have carefully honed my understanding on the risk
involves when doing the experiment. Knowing the risk involved when doing the experiment can
help me manage the risk and avoid them is possible. When I was using the Bunsen burner in the
experiment, I ensure that the rubber tube was secured firmly into the gas pipe and when light
the fire that I used a splint instead of a lighter. Another instance is when I was dealing with
boiling water in cooling curve experiment, I ensured that I wore gloves least I got burned if the
hot water spilled on my hand. The skill that I learned for each of the experiment are:

, 1) Making standard solution

When doing the experiment, I calibrated the weight, measured the substance correctly,
transferred to a breaker, allow the substance to dissolves, ensured that the solution have been
transferred to the correct volumetric flask and toped to the graduated mar, making sure to mix
thoroughly and labelled.

Personal skills

 Observation: it had difficulties from filling the substance up the graduated mark and it
tend to overshoot it and causing spillage. So, I decided to observe how others do their
practical and found that they used a pipette when reaching near the graduated mark. I
learned that I was doing it the wrong way and decided to change
 Patients: because I was impatient and I wanted to quickly finish the experiment I tend to
rush it which made me overshoot the solution. After calming down I decided to slowly
fill the volumetric flask until it near the graduated mark then switch to a pipette

Scientific skills

I had some prior experience of making the standard solution but I learned some new skill along the
way which was that you need to calibrate the balance before you used it which was interesting
because I was never told that another skill that I learned is that you need toughly shake the solution
as I always just left it directly.

What went well and what didn’t go well during the experiment

There was not really much trouble when doing the experiment overall. I was able to weigh the
balance, measure the chemical and calculate the concentration quite easily. And though out the
initial stage it hasn’t presented a challenge so far though as it goes to the later stages it problem
occur as I tend to overshoot the substance causing spillage thus causing me to start all over
again. This was the only problem I found when doing the

How I improve in my technique

I had prior experience so I was able to get on well with the experiment. There was a problem
encounter when doing the experiment which was that I tend to over shoot the solution. After
calming down I decided to observer how other people do it and I discover that when there were
reaching the graduated mark they switched to a pipette and poured dropwise until it reaches the
graduated mark. I decided to copy what they did and found out that it was much more quick and
efficient compare to my previous technique that I used.

Conclusion

After reading the feedback that I got from my teacher and my peers, I found out that was too
hasty to complete the work which caused me to make mistake. In an examination environment
this can be dangerous as there tend to changes to the way the solution way made could impact
the result of the titration. After a bit of reflecting, I intend to do my work more slow but steady
