, What was the German Empire?:
Kaiser Wilhelm 3rd →1888-1918:
-He wanted world power
-He believed that he would find “Germany’s place in the sun”
-Love hate relationship with Britain→ his Grandmother was Queen victoria and he envied
her navy and her empire.
-Prussia was the largest state in Germany and it covered some of Poland and Denmark.
-Only males could vote
Reichstag and Bundesrat:
-Reichstag had less power.
-Bundesrat had representatives from each state.
-Both of these had less power than Weimar did and the power lay in the Kaiser’s hands.
1880:
-Greater industrialisation→coal,steel,electron ions & chemicals.
-this lead to Greater urbanisation
Socialism:
-Socialists believe that power should be distributed not concentrated.
-Power had been concentrated in the catholic church, junkers, military & aristocrats.
-The Kaiser opposed socialism.
Naval Laws: 1889-1912
The first naval law was passed in 1898. It decreed that seven battleships would be built
bringing the total naval size to nineteen.
In 1900, the second naval law was passed and the size of the navy doubled to 38
battleships.

-expansion of the navy could provoke Britain -Created jobs
-Neighbouring countries could be provoked -challenged British dominance.
Into expanding their navies too. -Consolidated German military power.
-These Naval Laws were enforced through the Reichstag and he established himself as sole
ruler of Germany.
