Atomic Mass Unit (AMU)
In order to compare the masses of
different atoms or molecules, scientists
use a standard unit called the atomic mass
unit (AMU). One AMU is defined as 1/12th
of the mass of a carbon-12 atom. This
means that if you divide the mass of a
carbon-12 atom into 12 equal parts, each
part is 1 AMU or 1.66 x 10^-24 grams. The
mass of one whole carbon-12 atom is 1.99
x 10^-23 grams, which was calculated using
mass spectrometry.
,Atomic Mass of Nitrogen and Oxygen
The atomic mass of an element is the mass of one
atom of that element. For example, the atomic mass
of nitrogen is 14 AMU, which means that one atom
of nitrogen is 14 times heavier than 1 AMU or 1/12th
of the mass of a carbon-12 atom. Similarly, the
atomic mass of oxygen is 16 AMU, which means that
one atom of oxygen is 16 times heavier than 1 AMU
or 1/12th of the mass of a carbon-12 atom.
Understanding Atomic and Molecular Mass
In this lesson, we will learn about atomic and
molecular mass. Atomic mass is the mass of one
atom of an element, and molecular mass is the mass
of a single molecule.
Atomic Mass
The atomic mass of an element is a number that
tells us how many times an atom of that element is
heavier than 1 amu (atomic mass unit). For example,
the atomic mass of oxygen is 16 amu, which means
that one atom of oxygen is 16 times heavier than 1
amu.
, Atomic mass = number that tells how many
times an atom of an element is heavier than 1
amu
Relative atomic mass is another term for atomic
mass. The actual mass of an element can be
expressed as 1/12 of the mass of a carbon-12 atom
or 1.66 x 10^-24 grams divided by Avogadro's
number in grams.
Relative atomic mass = atomic mass
Actual mass = 1/12 of the mass of a carbon-12
atom or 1.66 x 10^-24 grams divided by
Avogadro's number in grams
It is important to remember the atomic masses of
some elements, starting from hydrogen till zinc, the
first 30 elements.
Molecular Mass
The molecular mass of a substance is the sum of
atomic masses of all the elements present in a
single molecule. For example, to calculate the
molecular mass of water, we need to calculate the
mass of one molecule of water, which is made up of
two hydrogen atoms (atomic mass of 1 amu each)
and one oxygen atom (atomic mass of 16 amu).
