Executive Summary
With this assignment, new network is proposed to a small scale Graphic Designing Company.
First of all, all the requirements are considered, check whether this company really needs a
network and what benefits are provided to the company by implementing a network.
And then it is considered what type of network is suitable for this company. That means
whether WAN, LAN or both should be implemented or not. Network architecture is selected
according to user requirements. And then suitable network topology is selected.
It should be mentioned especially that this new network has been implemented according to
IEEE standards.
Appropriate routing protocol has been selected considering existing user requirements and
potential future requirements.
According to selected IEEE standards, suitable hardware and software have been selected to
create new network infrastructure. Workstation hardware and server types are selected
according to user requirements and network compatibility.
Network has been designed according to user requirements. Maintenance schedule has been
designed to support the network system which includes backups, upgrades and auditing.
Finally conclusion is provided including strength, weaknesses and future recommendation of
the proposed network system.

Introduction
DIGITAL WORLD is a small scale Graphic designing company. The company was established
in 2005 in Colombo. They are planning to open a new branch in Kandy, within the organization
they are planning to have. So they are willing to implement a network to their branch office.
Proposed Network
1. 07 PCs for Front Office-05 PCs and 02 Laptops
2. 15 PCs for Type Setting
3. 02 PCs for the Branch Manager (01 Laptop)
4. 20 PCs for the Multimedia Department
5. 02 PCs for the Project Manager (01 Laptop)
6. 05 PCs for the Finance Department
7. IT Administration and System Support Department will have 10 PCs. (minimum 03
servers)
8. 20 PCs for the Web Development Department
9. Each user will get a login to access the intranet site.
10. Files are to be stored in a central location.
11. Centralized control of the network.
12. One printer for each department.
13. The network admin can access the server remotely.
14. The users can access internet through the proxy server.
15. Each department and labs are to be in different networks.
16. Each department uses different class C IP address (private IP address range).
17. The network has the facility to provide IPs dynamically as well.

Advantages of implementing a network to the company And Selecting
LAN/WAN or both
Digital World is a small scale Graphic Designing company. By implementing a network to this
company, many benefits can be got. New clients can be gained and sustainable business can be
built through network. Work efficiency is increased and faster decision making is allowed by
data sharing. And also users are allowed to have a better understanding of the position of the
business. Only resources related to his or her job functions, can be accessed by employees,
when setup appropriately with role-based security. Employees are allowed to log in at any
workstation and carry on his/her work, minimizing loss of productivity and downtime caused
by failed workstation. (Anon., n.d.)
There are 8 departments in the company. So PCs, laptops and servers in every departments
should be connected together. So implementing a computer network to the company, maximum
use can be got out of the computers and peripheral devices. Files can be shared among
computers easily by implementing a network. Same data file can be accessed by many users.
It is need to keep communication with other workers through the company. Information can be
exchanged via e-mails or using the internet. Decision making can be improved by information
sharing.
Software resources can be shared among computers easily to reduce the cost. Example: It is
enough to purchase a one copy of Microsoft Office package and it can be installed on the
network, so any user can access the software. So it is no need to keep a copy on every PC, disk
space is saved. Software maintenance is simplified by this sharing. Because installation of any
software upgrades can be done once on the network server. So it is no need to upgrade all the
computers. In this company each department has only one printer. So this printer should be
shared among all the users in the department. A single broadband internet connection can be
accessed among multiple PC users concurrently. So everyone can do research, exchange
message, monitor business development and fully understand the advantage of Internet at any
time. Images, Audio files, video files, etc. which are wanted for Multimedia Department and
stored remotely can be accessed in the office by implementing a network. Data is also can be
shared through company. Users are allowed to setup a central data source for multiple computer
access by some applications like accounting, contact management, scheduling as well as billing
software. The same set of data can be viewed and modified by multiple computers, once the
source is setup. Backup all the information in PCs can be done easily through the network.
