Unit-8 E-Commerce Assignment-3
P5 - Examine the social implications of e-commerce on society
Benefits of e-commerce for customers
Remote shopping lets customers purchase products over the internet, which means that they don’t actually
have to go to their local shop and search for their items, they can just simply browse their wanted product
on the website using the search engine and enter the item’s keywords, which should make searching and
purchasing easier and a lot quicker. Websites can be access with low internet connection although it might
take a little bit more time, but what matters is that an item can be purchased basically anywhere using an
electronic device. It is also more comfortable and easier to use e-commerce websites.
For example another benefit is that people who cannot leave their house due to their disability or for other
reasons, they will have the option to purchase goods at their homes using e-commerce websites, and get
their goods delivered directly to their home at an exact time which has been stated when the goods were
bought (receipt usually or approx. Time stated on website).
It lets people have access to e-commerce websites basically anywhere using an electronic device and having
a reliable internet connection which is needed to load in web pages etc. This makes shopping comfortable
from anywhere as people can buy their products e.g.: on the train, at home or at their workplace during
their break time.
Online discounts let people save money on goods. This is good for both the companies and for the
customers as companies will get more attention and customers will actually be able to save some or serious
money on different products. Also, discounts are better designed on websites as they are ‘eye catching’, so
more people will notice it and perhaps purchase items using e-commerce websites.
Search engines are so precised nowadays that websites have implemented a similar algorithm which will
give better results to customers just by trying to look up an item using their keywords such as: hdmi (this
will give results for hdmi cables and or perhaps hdmi capable devices, depending on what categories have
or will be/been selected). Search boxes can also speed up the experience the website has to offer by
making searches more reliable and quicker all this in less than a second.
Drawbacks of e-commerce for customers
Credit card fraud is a big issue for online web shops; however this can be avoided by implementing security
software and the right question form guidelines which most websites seem to use nowadays. Payment
protection is one of the highest priority things that e-commerce website are looking out for, as many bad
things happened in the past such as: people purchased goods by paying with someone else’s credit cards.
Customer’s must look out for who they’re giving their credit card details and must be aware of what could
happen with their information before and afterwards purchasing and or using different services. Payment
charges could also apply by not reading the right terms.
Customers must be aware of what they are purchasing over the internet by looking up their product
description and reading that carefully. If the price seems to be too low for what it is, it could be fake.
Companies must be aware of this too, and must take actions against and to avoid these kind of things by
implementing different security software and or by having staff overlooking the buyable goods on the
website. Goods must be described correctly and carefully as false information can get the company sued for
a valid reason and so customers can buy falsely described products which can make future and current
customers avoid using the website.
