D1 - Evaluate the impact of a potential future development in HCI
In this assignment, I will describe a few future developments which I am interested about, and
could potentially change our lives in all aspects. (Society, economy, culture)

The rapidly growing technology has a huge impact on the society, economy and on our culture. We
are constantly changing our lives by adopting the newest technology into our pockets, homes, cars
and other things.

There are companies out there making smart homes by making ‘smart’ fridges, washing machines,
(Samsung for example) thermostats (Google Nest), wardrobes, TVs, beds and much much more, that
we are currently using in the every-day use. There are also smart cars and self-driving cars that are
continuously getting developed by giant companies like Mercedes, BMW, VW, Tesla etc.

Self-driving cars would give more people access to a cheap way to reach their destinations. It
requires no driving experience, and it offers an extremely safe driving experience even in bad
weather conditions. Google has proven that it is safe by having sensors from top-to-bottom, and by
proving that the accidents the car has suffered were not caused by the ‘technology’, but the bad
drivers whom were on the road. On the long run, this self-driving car could take elderly, disabled and
other people taking to their designed locations just by telling the car the exact location. It would
make every-day use of the car very easy as it works by electricity, so no pollution to the
environment, and can last for hours on a single charge.

There are other companies making different improvements in the healthcare by making products
that would help the disabled and other people facing different illnesses. One example of this is Voice
enabled services. Some vending machines and other type of machines/shops (even some self-
services) offer voice control and a ‘narrator’ mode that helps people get things done even though
they may face a disability or an illness that could make them unable to do certain tasks that are
simple and basic for average customers.

VR (Virtual Reality) helps people get to places where they normally would never be able to get. A
good example for this is Google Maps. Google is planning on putting their First person view (real
360degree pictures of places) into VR, so people e.g.: in London, could easily visit the Egypt
Pyramids. People with disabilities could also use this feature to get away of the same view they face
