Form HSC AG 3: Work Experience Placement Plan
Explain how work experience placement supports the
development of my professional skills and my personal
attributes? Include the following:
Refecting on own skills and attributes and areas for development
Being on placement will help me see how children learn compared to young adults like myself, it will be
interesting to see what I can learn from the children and the teaching styles I witness. Actively being on
placement and experiencing the situation first hand will help me recognise what I’m doing well and what I
need to work on by seeing how the placement staff and service users react and develop to me helping and
being around them. ‘A way of assessing yourself, your ways of working and how you study
’(http://www.open.ac.uk/choose/unison/develop/my- skills/self-refection accessed 11th October 2018) this quote
helps to explain what refection is a how it benefits you. Working in real life will help me learn and use
important policies that I will need when I’m working. I will try to identify what I’m doing well and what I need
to improve on by asking placement staff and even the children there what they think and their ideas, Their
opinions are very valuable to me because the staff have learnt a lot themselves from work and children are the
people using the services so their input is crucial.
Developing professionalism
Experience of working in a professional environment will help infuence my behaviour on placement and working in
general. For example, I will learn the importance of being punctual at work, this is important because being
punctual shows staff that you are a reliable member of the team, this also includes regular attendance as its
important to remember that being at placement is at a benefit to me and not necessarily to the placement;
however acting responsibly and following procedures and policies could result in being a significant help to
the placement staff as well. Dressing appropriately will also be vital in a work place, I will learn this by
witnessing the staff’s attire and following the company’s policies on certain clothing. Professional-to-
Professional work language is also a key point I will learn as my mannerisms and the way I talk to friend
would be different to talking to a supervisor. ‘A willingness to work rather than have a good time shows
diligence.’ (https://www.theiet.org/students/work-careers/work- experience/benefits.cfm accessed 11th
October 2018) This quotes supports the idea that work experience helps to differentiate you from people who
haven’t had a placement in that field of work.
Communication and interpersonal skills
Good and polite communication skills are essential for people working in health and social care because
service users rely on you to make them feel calm and comfortable. Listening to the people you work
with is one of the most important skills needed at placement, to be able to understand tasks and
procedures I need to listen, but also to understand what the service users and in my case, children
need from me. Speaking and non verbal forms of communication such as sign language or Braille are
also very important, this is because I need to find ways to talk to people and help them feel safe and
respected. Written and electronic ways of communication are sometimes considered differently when
thinking about the way in which we communicate, for example they tend to be more professional then
people sometimes talk to colleagues, Placement will help me develop these skills by experiencing them first
hand and making mistakes and learning from them. Interpersonal skills are vital because they are
‘Fundamental element to any healthcare interaction’ (https://www.bartleby.com/essay/Importance-of-
Interpersonal-Communication-Skills-in-Healthcare-P3JRJF6AVC , accessed 11th October 2018)
