Confidentiality
Confidentiality means keeping personal, general things in secret and isn’t shared to
anyone else. Confidentiality is respecting personal information. In a health and social
care environment confidentiality means that we do not share any private information
without permission. Health and social care workers will have access to personal
information about the service users, it is their responsbility to ensure that the
information is only shared when necessary. However there will be times where health
and social care workers will have to breach confidentiality with other collegues, or a
senior manager.
If a health and social care worker did a treat young person with confidentiality then
positive impacts will definitely occur. If confidentiality is applied correctly, then this can
support the service user in many ways. If confidentiality is applied correctly then
positive and healthy relationships will form. This is because the young person will feel
relieved that they can say any private information without it being disclosed. This will
make the service user feel more content in the environment that the service users are
in. For example, Amreen (one of the young people) has a severe disability and wanted to
end her life a painless death by euthanasia. Amreen didn’t want this to be disclosed,
however as the health and social care worker, this information had to be disclosed, so I
had to breach confidentiality, to my manager. At the end Amreen had got professional
help. So by me breaching confidentiality this got Amreen professional help she needed.
It is important that the health and social care workers to have a relationship of trust
between the service users, in this case young people. If a young person is at risk and it is
difficult to obtain consent from the young person, information will have to be shared to
prevent harm. To provide effective health and social care support, it is also very
important that records of service users are secure and updated. Health and social care
workers have to obide with the Data Protection Act 1998 and the Human Rights Act
1998. Maintaining confidentiality would have postitive effect on the young person as
they would develop a more positive and a more healthy relationship with the health and
social care worker. This would lead to the young person to have a higher self-esteem
and more confidence knowing that whatever secrets they disclose, it won’t be discussed.
