Purpose:
The purpose of this investigation is to determine the water-holding capacity of different soil types.
Materials:
- 6 plastic cups
- 6 different soil types (e.g. sand, silt, clay, loam, peat, chalk)
- Water
- Measuring cylinder
- Stopwatch
- Scales
- Spoon
- Paper towels
Procedure:
1. Label each cup with the name of the soil type it will contain.
2. Weigh each cup and record its weight.
3. Fill each cup with the corresponding soil type, and level the surface.
4. Weigh each cup again with soil and record its weight.
5. Add 100 ml of water to each cup.
6. Start the stopwatch and observe for 5 minutes, allowing the water to be absorbed by the soil.
7. After 5 minutes, use the measuring cylinder to measure the remaining amount of water in each
cup, and record the value.
8. Clean and dry cups to reuse for further trials.
9. Repeat steps 2-8 two more times for each soil type to ensure accuracy.
10. Calculate the water-holding capacity using the following formula:
Water-holding capacity = (Initial weight of soil + water - Remaining water) / Initial weight of soil x
