Project Evaluation (P7)
The project is still in progress, half way through the website creation and testing phase, but I have experienced a few
positive and less positive features during the process. First of all, the Gantt chart I created for the project’s schedule
has worked well as the schedule has been brought forward due to task being completed before their expected
deadlines. I updated the schedule accordingly, shortening the overall timespan of the project and potentially
allowing more time for the most important task of creating the website as a result. I was able to create schedule
update forms to show the changes in the Gantt chart with evidence of details and why they occurred.
The set monitoring points (meetings) between task were successful as they happened as planned with positive and
helpful feedback from students and the client that allowed me to continue to the next phases of the project. The
meetings helped exceedingly as I achieved a distinction in the first two assignments for unit 28, while currently
completing the third assignment. Another positive aspect of the project was the availability of resources, only
software and my work was needed for to complete the design and website itself which was all readily available
online with my work organised on my computer, as well as in the cloud.
A less positive of the process was the transition from the pre-planned web hosting service of WordPress to
Wix.com; I chose this platform as it allows for more customisability as WordPress limits the user to placing
media into set places with very limited options. Wix.com allows me to get the end product closer to the
original designs, but it is small setback due to having to learn how to use and make changes to plans.
Wix.com also allows me to use HTML/CSS by adding my own code to the website instead of editing the
source code of a WordPress site, this allows me to use snippets of code that I write instead of creating a
website from scratch as my ability to code in HTML is not professional standard.
The website creation and testing phase is likely to get unexpected errors within the code, which should be
simple to fix with the help of my notes, tutorials, and sites like GitHub to provide examples. The client has
asked to show the progress of the site by the 2nd of December so a prototype must be prepared by that
deadline and the client may also ask for changes to be made to the website in future, which will extend the
time spent on the project.
In future projects, I will make sure to assess the alternatives (in this project, it was the web hosting
services) to make sure that I choose the best option for the plan and specification, this will mean more
research and trying out different resources before settling on one. Another change would be a more
specific and detailed plan/schedule, for example, what parts of the website I will be building within time
spans instead of the entire website as one task. Broken up task will be easier to complete while granting
satisfaction and motivation to continue; it would also ensure too much time is not spent on certain
aspects.
Evaluation of Project Tools (D2)
I used a number of online tools and software to create my project and the product itself, for the project I
used Microsoft Project, Microsoft Word, Outlook Email and OneDrive. Microsoft Project was used to create
a schedule in the form of a Gantt chart, this was created as part of the specification, to keep track of task
and deadlines while having set, regular meetings with the stakeholders. The software was very simple to
create the Gantt chart and fill in the information to get the finished chart, making it quick and effective
which meant there was not much time lost in planning. Microsoft Project has many features and
capabilities that I would have liked to explore, potentially creating different schedules that granted
differing information to find the best for the project. A downside of Project was that it is very expensive to
purchase at home so the software was only available in college, due to this – I lacked time to experiment
with it and did not find a way to place monitoring points that were not placed on the chart as tasks but as
markers so I added in red lines and a Key to present when they would take place. As previously mentioned
I should have created more detailed plans instead of large and non-specific task.
