Objectives:
At the end of this activity each child should be able to sit and listen to another person speak
without interrupting them and be able to communicate clearly to another person to a standard
where the other person knows what the child is talking about. At the end of the activity each
child as part of the foundation phase curriculum should be able to understand the importance of
listening to what another person is saying and be able to listen to the other child with
concentration and be able to reiterate the main points of what the child has said back to another
individual (Welsh Government 2015). The children by the end of this activity should be more
comfortable communicating with anyone that they speak to and have confidence in their
communication skills.

Description of the setting/location where the activity will take place:
This activity will take place in the classroom with children sat at their desks.
Resources/Preparation:
For this activity all I need is plastic cups, scissors, string and stickers to decorate the cups. I
, will need to make the holes in the cups and thread the string through the hole and tie a knot
before I take the cups to class to complete the activity. I will also need to think of a topic that
all children in the class would like to talk about and would be interested in listening to. I will
also need to speak to the teacher of the setting about when would be the best time for me to do
this activity with the children.
Health & Safety/Risk Assessment:
Before the activity takes place, a comprehensive risk assessment will be carried out to assess
any factors of the child sitting at the desk that could be hazardous to anyone involved in the
activity, who it would put at risk during the activity and how and what I could do to minimise
or erase the risk. I will be following the health and safety policies and procedures of the setting
(BBC 2020).
Description of how you plan to implement the activity:
The first step of this activity is to put the children in pairs I will pick the pairs by picking out
their name sticks out of the plant pot so the child they were partnered with is random. The
children involved in this activity will be the year 2 children so there will be ten pairs of two.
Then I will seat the pairs opposite each other on the desk so that they are close enough to hear
each other and the string is spread out. After everyone is seated in their pairs, I will explain to
the children using child appropriate language that they will be talking about what they had
done at the previous weekend. I will tell them that they must take it in turns and in order to
speak they must speak in the cup and in order to listen they must put the cup over their ear. The
teacher of the class and I will demonstrate to the children before the activity begins and ask
each pair to tell each other their names using the cup and string to show their understanding.
Then I will allow the children to speak about what they had done on the weekend each child
will have three minutes to speak about their weekend and three minutes to listen about the
other child’s weekend. All the children will speak at the same time as there are only ten teams
