Aim of the Activity:

To plan an activity that promotes the wellbeing and resilience of children and young people



Objectives:

At the end of the activity the year 2 children will know that they cannot win at everything in

life and that it is normal to not come out on top for everything in life. As a child in the

Foundation Phase at the end of this activity the children should have learnt more about the

rules of social behaviour through playing musical chairs. As part of the Personal and Social

Development, Well-being, and Cultural Diversity sector of the Welsh Curriculum, it is

important for children in the Foundation Phase to be involved in indoor and outdoor activities.

(Welsh Government 2015). At the end of the activity the children’s listening skills will also be

improved by having to constantly listen out to the music during this activity.

Description of the setting/location where the activity will take place:

This activity will take place in the physical education (PE) hall which is an open hall that has

gymnastic apparatus, thick gymnastic mats, two seating benches and wooden floor.


Resources/Preparation:

For this activity I will need to wait for the day in the school week where year two have a PE

, lesson which was a Friday the week of this activity. I will also have to ensure that the PE hall

is free for the year two class to use. Before this activity I will also attach non-slip grips to the

chairs legs of the chairs I will be using to reduce any accidents and have to line the chairs up

in the PE hall ready for the year two’s PE lesson. I will also have to find child friendly music

that the teacher deems suitable to play musical chairs to or the teacher might recommend a

song that the class is learning at the moment. I will need to bring in my laptop or use a

technological piece of equipment like a school iPad to the activity to be able to play the music

and pause it easily.

Health & Safety/Risk Assessment:

Before the activity takes place, a comprehensive risk assessment will be carried out to assess

any factors of the children playing musical chairs in the physical education hall that could be

hazardous to anyone involved in the activity, who it would put at risk during the activity and

how and what I could do to minimise or erase the risk. I will be adhering to the Health and

Safety at Work Act (1974) by following the health and safety policies and procedures of the

setting (BBC 2020).

Description of how you plan to implement the activity:

The first step of the activity is to ensure that the year two children have their PE kit and are all

changed in time for the activity. The year two class is made up of twenty children so I will

have ten chairs back-to-back. The second step is to explain the rules of musical chairs to the

children using child appropriate language I will explain to the children that they will move

around the hall when the music is playing and when the music stops, they must find a chair to

sit on and the child without a chair will have to sit out until the next round I will explain that

every round I will remove a chair until there is one chair left. After explaining the rules, I will

double check with the children that they understand the rules. I will then ask children at

random to tell me one of the rules to ensure that they do understand the rules. Before the
