UNIT 1 –COMMUNICATION AND EMPLOYABILITY SKILLS – ATTRIBUTES, SKILLS AND
BARRIERS ASSIGNMENT 1 OF 3

Aspects of employability skills.
There are many aspects of employability skills including job specific attributes, general
attributes and attitudes valued by employers.
Job specific attributes:
Job related attributes carry the knowledge of the good working procedures and carry out the
job. An example of a Job-related attribute would be Technical skills. This is where you can
demonstrate this skill by showing your previous qualifications and technical knowledge of the
subject. Technical skills are valued by employers so when employers are searching for
candidate/s, they can rule out candidates that do not have the knowledge and qualifications,
which would prevent employers wasting time interviewing candidates who are not qualified.
Good working procedures is a set of steps which should be carried out in the work place
such as health and safety and security issues. The Health and Safety Work Act (1974)
states that all employees ‘Take reasonable care of themselves and others who could be
affected by what they do’, so if you are unwell you should stay off until you recover this is so
no one else is at risk of becoming ill.
General attributes:
General attributes are mostly skills which employers value. An example of a General
attribute would be Time management, this is when you manage your time efficentley and so
that tasks are completed within a certain amount of time. This also helps you to become
organised. Time management is valued by employers as it shows if you are committed and
organised which lets the employer know that you want this job.
Another example of a General attribute would be Numeracy skills, this is a vital skill which is
needed in any job such as telling the time. In IT you need Numeracy skills to create
programs, and calculate simple and complex data. Numeracy skills are valued by employers
as it shows that you have the basic knowledge and they can rely on you to get the job done.
Attitudes:
Attitudes are behaviours that are valued by employers. An example of an Attitude would be
Determination, this when you are determined to get tasks done even if they are challenging.
Determination can also help if the task you have been given is not interesting or creative.
Determination is valued by employers as it shows you are self-motivated to get the job done.
Another example of an Attitude would be Leadership skills, this is when you can lead a
group of people or yourself, you do this by understanding what motivates your colleagues
and what each colleague’s strengths and weaknesses are. This can lead to visions of your
team achieving things. Leadership skills are valued by employers as it shows you have
respect for yourself and your team mates, it can also show your employer that you can work
independently and in a team.
