I have investigated learning style theories to get results on my specific learning style, within
education. I have used a learning style known as ‘Honey and Mumford’, which is used to convey your
style of learning, for instance, whether you’re an activist, which is a student that likes to be
centralised and lead in certain learning activities. Also, activists tend to understand work much
better if they do it in groups and not passively. Another style is theorist, which prefer to learn best
from structured learning, lectures and demonstrations centred on facts and precise teaching. In
addition, another learning style used is pragmatist, which are learners that understand work better if
they do physical activities associated with it, like demonstrations, work experience & project work.
Finally, the last style within the Honey & Mumford theory is reflectors, which are learners that
usually like to observe activities and think thoroughly over certain topics. Also, they tend to prefer to
do collective research on data and case studies. The Honey & Mumford learning style above has
allowed me to understand my style and hopefully enables me to learn in a much more productive
way if I adhere to it.
The Honey and Mumford learning style was created by two guys called Peter Honey and Alan
Mumford in 1986. The four distinct learning styles they identified were; Activist, Pragmatist,
Reflector and Theorist (as mentioned above), which are used to allocate various learning techniques
to individuals to influence a better learning environment. The learning style, which was best suited
to me was the style, ‘theorist'. This learning method means that I prefer to understand the theory
behind certain actions, as well as needing model work and facts to engage more and primarily
understand learning. In addition, this learning style states that I prefer to analyse and synthesise in a
logical & methodical way, which I personally think is relatable to the way I learn and structure my
thoughts.
The Honey and Mumford learning style has helped me understand what activities I can do to achieve
a better personal development and learning environment. For example, if I am learning/doing a task
it is best for me to know facts about that specific task, as well as structuring my ideas methodically
so my purpose is clear and understanding as well. Furthermore, other methods that can help me
learn productively are; to ask questions for further knowledge/information, which will allow me to
have a better idea of the subject and will increase my learning attribute. Also, applying statistics and
known logical theories to my work, which will help me learn more and improve my knowledge of the
work and how to increment it within my mind. The final learning technique that is associated with
my style of learning, and what I think will personally be associated with my working form is doing the
