Identify two major topics associated with child and adolescent psychology and summarize
what you have learned about these topics.

Two major topics associated with child and adolescent psychology that I have learned to be
interesting are socioemotional development and physical development. I have learned that the
major milestones for any developmental topic are Infancy (0–18 months), Toddlerhood (18
months–3 years), Early childhood (3–6 years), Middle-late childhood (7–12 years), and
Adolescence (13–18 years). From the physical development perspective, we see a baby grow
into a full adolescent in which there are different stages with different rates of growth. The stages
start with fast growth to the gain of motor skills to then slow down again to muscle mass increase
to finally hitting puberty. The socioemotional development goes through stages starting with an
infant developing attachment to their caregiver. In the next stage the development follows with
the gain of varieties of emotions and the stage after one can have an increase in friendships. Self-
awareness will come in middle-late childhood and lastly follows with adolescences where
morals, ethics, and beliefs are established.

summarize what you have learned about these topics.

The two majors topics associated with industrial/organizational psychology that I have learned
are employee selection and Harter’s competence motivation theory. I had a key interest in
Harter’s theory as it is specific to the workplace and can be useful once I can understand it and
apply it in the workforce. The author of our book states, “Harter’s competence motivation theory
states that achievement motivation is based on a person’s feelings of personal competence
(Harter, 1978; 1981). Self-determination theory (SDT) postulates that three psychological needs
support one’s self-motivation and are crucial to psychological health and well-being:
competence, relatedness (belonging), and autonomy (Ryan & Deci, 2000, 2017).” (Harper et al.,
2020). This means that our feelings of how we see are self at work can greatly determine our
motivation and performance. What I learned from employee selection is that knowledge, skills,
abilities, and other characteristics (KSAO’s) are important to understand what the job requires
from one to be successful in their role.
