Hanaane Yala UNIT 5 ASSIGNMENT
A P1: Explain the importance of promoting equality and diversity for individuals with
different needs.
In health and social care Equality means that everyone has equal access to the
services that they need. What this is meant is that they will be receiving service for
their personal needs without being judged about their belief, gender, sexuality,
disability, ethnicity, race, and culture. The definition of Equality is the state of being
equal in status, rights, or opportunities which links to the Equality Act 2010 which is
legally protects people in the workplace. The definition of Diversity is a variety or
range of things. The importance of promoting Equality and Diversity for individuals
with different needs is that it helps to promote Independence, Empowerment, Anti-
discriminatory, and ensures safety for both the service user and the service provider.
When there is a lack of Independence it will be hard for the service user to be
confident on opening and needing the assistance in whatever service that they need.
To increase the independence of the service user you can give options to benefit
their experience even more. For example, they can give Jim and R better options for
their care plan so they can be able to understand and be part of the service so they
can know what needs to improve and what is able to help and not help both Jim and
R. To provide Jim independence is to provide equipment so it can be easy for him to
continue his everyday life and to travel places on his own for example, his
appointments or the pharmacy to get his medication when they run out. As Jim is a
Methodist, the service providers may treat him differently as the service providers
may not agree with Jim’s beliefs. Jim may need help with celebrations e.g.,
Christmas or Easter as Jim is a little bit unsteady with the service providers will have
to respect that Jim does not drink alcohol. A health provider/s that can help R
promote equality and diversity is his multi-disciplinary team as they are helping him
to become independent and keeping his dignity intact which is making him feel like
he is part of something. He may not feel left out as he does know what is going on
around him. The health provider needs to promote Equality and Diversity as they
need to prevent discrimination so Jim can live a life that he can live comfortably in.
M1: Analyse the impact of preventing discrimination for individuals with different
needs.
Discrimination is when someone has a prejudice against a person or a group of
people. They might discriminate the person by their age, race, gender, ethnicity,
social class, religious beliefs, sexuality, ability, health, where someone lives, family
structure, secular beliefs, disability, the way they look or the way someone dresses.
The different type of discrimination is unfair discrimination where you are treated
unfairly compared to others. Direct discrimination is where a person is being openly
discriminatory. Indirect discrimination is harder to prove because it is not clear. Lastly
there is positive discrimination where is done selectively to promote or create greater
, opportunities for specific (normally underrepresented) groups. The effects of
discrimination on an individual can cause the person to think that they are an
outsider. It can lead people to depression and anxiety thinking that they are not good
enough. It can cause stress and can lead to mental illness. It can make the service
users reluctant to seek support or treatment. It can make the individual lose their
confidence when trying to reach out for help as they do not want to get mistreated.
Discrimination can also impact on waiting times for diverse groups for example, they
may receive POC/ BAME later than they will do to those who are white. Both case
studies did not face discrimination but if they did R may face direct discrimination as
he does enjoy dressing in clothes that are usually associated with woman which can
lead him to go through depression and anxiety as he cannot do the things, he liked
no more which may let him lose a sense of who he is. R may also face unfair
discrimination as he may not be treated as he does have a speech and language
therapist which people may pick on him as he is not able to stand up for himself so
he may need an advocate so they can represent his views this can lead him to
withdraw himself to social activities. Jim may face discrimination because of his
religion as he is a Methodist and people may not agree with his religion as they may
have different views which may lead him to loss his self-esteem and live in fear of
others as he may feel threatened.
The initiatives are Diet, Access, support, and the use of advocacy. Diet is when there
is choice for those with medical conditions, religious requirements, or cultural
preference. Access is when the environment can be adapted, for example by having
wide corridors, ramps, disabled toilets, lifts, wide automatically opening doors,
counters, signs at wheelchair level, no obstacles or clutter and hearing loops.
Support is when there is appropriate resources and information are provided in a
wide range of formats and languages to reflect local cultures, with advocates,
translators, interpreters, and carers available to help. The use of advocacy is when
someone is referred to as an advocate who can speak on behalf of someone else.
For R, the initiatives that are applied to his case is that he needs access as he may
need aids for his everyday life when he leaves his house to go places for example,
his appointments they can provide ramps for his wheelchair or wide automatically
opening doors, so he does not need to get up and use the handle the doors nut
instead the doors able to open for him. Another initiative that can be applied to R
case is the use of advocacy services as he does have epilepsy and he is in speech
and language therapy he would need an advocate to represent his views at his
appointments, so the health providers are able to understand what he needs to help
him carry on with his everyday life. Physically if the initiative access is not done for
R, he may not be able to go anywhere which requires him to take his wheelchair so
he can move about and travel. Physically not having the use of advocacy for R it can
impact him as he may not get the right support as he is in speech and language
therapy so the health providers may not understand him or take him seriously which
can affect him intellectually as he may not be able to socialise with others and also
he does not like to be seen in his wheelchair which can make it difficult for him to
