HELLP syndrome is a potentially life-threatening pregnancy complication that usually occurs in the third
trimester or soon after childbirth. HELLP is an acronym that stands for:
Hemolysis: H from HELLP refers to the destruction of red blood cells, which can lead to anemia.
Elevated Liver enzymes: EL from HELLP syndrome often causes liver damage, which can be
detected through elevated liver enzyme levels in the blood.
Low Platelet count: LP from HELLP syndrome i.e. low platelets. Thrombocytes, more commonly
known as, platelets are essential for blood clotting. In HELLP syndrome, the platelet count drops
significantly ultimately increasing the risk of internal bleeding.
The exact cause of HELLP syndrome is not known yet, but it is believed to be related to problems with
the blood vessels that supply the placenta. Factors such as high blood pressure (pre-eclampsia),
genetics, and immune system dysfunction may contribute to its development.
The signs and symptoms of HELLP syndrome includes:
- Fatigue
- Nausea or vomiting
- Headache
- Upper abdominal pain(especially right arm) or tenderness
- Swelling (edema), especially in the face, hands and feet
- High blood pressure(more than 120/80 mmhg) aka pre eclampsia
- Changes in vision, such as blurred vision or seeing spots
- Easy bruising or bleeding
- Decreased urine output( with or without uti)
- Upset gut( severe diarrhea or constipation)
