“How successful was the Conservative Government’s handling of the industrial
disputes in the period 1979-1987”

NUM strikes
Massive rebellions, which were not like your typical strike as it was considered to be
a war against the government. It was extremely violent.
In 1981 Thatcher backed down and gave the miners a raise and agreed to buy
more British coal rather than Chinese coal. This could potentially choke up the
miners for the years to come. The Plan for Coal was set up by the National Coal
Board. This was considered to be a U-Turn from Thatchers part.

1982 Employment Act: Tibits Law by Norman Tibit - Employment secretary
Higher compensation for more dismissed doe to closed shop and restricted the
immunities enjoyed by Trade Unions. People who were not part of a Union foul not
join other Unions or participate in their strikes. Unions can now be sued.

New Trade Union law changes in 80, 82, 84, 88
Required at least 80% if closed shop
Act 1984: This meant to strike the Gad to have a majority for yes and at least 50%
of responses submitted. Not a lot of respondance therefore the miners strike was
illegal.
