From 1989-2001 (9/11) = considered as the age of retreat of the west where there was
minor intervention to the wider world.
After the Cold War it was thought that socialism had been defeated and the liberal
democracy would win
After the event of 9/11 there was a reawakening where troops were sent to Afghanistan
Background on Yugoslavia:
It constituted of the following modern day countries: Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia &
Herzegovina, Serbia, Montenegro and North Macedonia
Yugoslavia set up in 1919 after the Treaty of Vienna - in an attempt to unify the Austrian
empire, the only problem is that no one hates the Slavs more than other Slavs - so
essentially all the ethnic groups detested each other.
Due to Stalin - Tito split, Yugoslavia was run all these years relatively well due to Tito -
whom the people loved
However mid 80s Tito dies = talks started regarding regional authority
Due to the rooted hatred of the different ethnic groups, Yugoslavia was bound to fall
apart (eventually leading to genocide)
