If there is no increase in size on a repeat x-ray, the patient may be discharged but asked to return for another x-ray in 24 to 48 hours. Chest-tube thoracostomy with underwater seal drainage is the most common treatment for all types of pneumothoraces. A tension pneumothorax requires immediate needle decompression followed by chest-tube thoracostomy
