SOCIAL MEDIA AND MENTAL HEALTH
The Relationship Between the Amount of Social Media Usage and Depression in Adolescents
Social media has become an integral part of daily life for adolescents and young adults. People
socialize through the process of upbringing and under the influence of the environment. In
consequence, the educational environment of the present younger generation has changed substantially
and now consists mainly of the Internet and social networks. Social networks have become essential
conduits of interpersonal contact because they can meet basic user demands, which explains their
current popularity and ubiquity. Thanks to social networks, a person with minimal energy expenses and
resources can provide himself with communication, the existence of interpersonal relationships, and the
ability to see unique personalized images with which to identify.
Most adolescents check their social media postings and accounts as soon as they wake up. The
impact of these networks on adolescents is relevant since it poses a significant issue: today's younger
generation spends an increasing amount of time on social media, and changing this fact is now
impossible. Many young people have never lived in a world without social media, and a considerable
proportion of adolescent pupils need to be made aware of the influence these media can have on their
mental health.
The World Health Organization (2021) states that depression affects 280 million people
globally. It is characterized by experiencing a depressed mood, a loss of enjoyment or interest in
activities, low self-esteem, and difficulty concentrating, among other symptoms. Adolescents'
happiness and life satisfaction declined significantly between 2011 and 2018, while depression and
suicide attempts rose (Keyes et al., 2019). Depression is associated with various major issues, such as a
decline in academic performance, deteriorating interpersonal relationships, and an increased risk of
drug addiction and suicide (Hartanto et al., 2021).
