Lee Lee - ANSWER-Full name is Leenora, goes to Northside Highschool, best friends with Jade,
introduced York to Jade, Has a cousin named Andrea, likes to write poems, scared of the police, wrote a
poem to present at at the art show at Mia's gallery in honor of Natasha Ramsey. Help Jade find her voice,
her Jade are able to understand each-other even though they both go to different schools
Mrs.Parker - ANSWER-Jade's guidance counselor, is the first person to bring up the Woman to Woman
program to Jade, has a black son of law that grew up in Jade's neighborhood but now lives in Lake
Oswego (a mostly white area), try to "help Jade" through nominating her for classes where she can be
helped, allows Jade to be nominated for the study abroad trip for next year, signs up Jade for all these
programs that can "help" her and even though that she is trying to help her it makes Jade feel like she is
broken and reminds Jade more how different she is
Maxine - ANSWER-last name is Winters, African American, Jade's mentor for the Woman to Woman
program, doesn't have a "real" job, grew up with a rich family, went to St.Francis and was valedictorian,
graduated recently from Portland State University, ex boyfriend is Jon (E.J's friend), very flaky with Jade
at the beginning of the program but, eventually gets better, Jade thought that Maxine thought that Jade
was "her chairity case" and she only did this to feel better about herself, treats Jade like she needs to be
helped but eventually stopped doing that, mom is a surgeon and dad is a real estate agent, siblings are
Mia and Nathan, least cared about in the family, not the best releationship with family
Jade Butler - ANSWER-sixteen year old,junior, African American, goes to a mostly white school on a
scholarship, lives in Portland, Oregon, last name is Butler, doesn't have lots of money, lives with her mom
and her uncle (E.J, mom's little brother), has a dad but doesn't live with him, best friends are Lee Lee and
Sam
Sam - ANSWER-A white teen that is also in Jade's grade, becomes friends with Jade very quickly, lives
with her grandparents, her grandma has altimezers and her grandfather has to eat healthy, Grandparents
are Mr. and Mrs. Franklin, mom left her, Jade use to call her "book girl", also on scholarship, downplays
the racists things that happen to Jade, gets nominated to go to the Costa Rica which makes Jade feel
really angry and puts a wedge into their friendship, eventually apoligizes to each-other in Spanish,
through her and Jade's friendship Jade finds her voice,
, Mr.Flores - ANSWER-Jade's and Sam's Spanish teacher, one role model for Jade, supports Jade and
understands her more then probably the rest of Jade's teacher's, watched the Natasha Ramsey press
confrence with Jade ( made Jade feel like she has someone she trusts),nominates Sam for the study
abroad program and not Jade, his reasoning for not nominating Jade for the study abroad program is
basically that he needs to treat all his students fairly and give all his students the same opportunities,
Jade works up the courage to ask him why she wasn't allowed to go on the study abroad trip, Jade earn's
her voice here, put Sam and Jade together so they can be friends again, eventually apologizes to Jade for
overlooking her and nominates her for next's year trip
York - ANSWER-was a slave that was on the Lewis and Clark expedition, was a very important part in the
expedition and helped Lewis and Clark a lot, was allowed certain privileges that most slaves weren't
allowed to have for example like carry a gun and vote where they are going next in the expedition, was
strong and confident even through all his struggles,York's journey with Lewis and Clark represents Jade's
journey throughout the book finding her own identity and strength. Jade admired York
Jade's mom - ANSWER-had Jade at sixteen years old, didn't attend college, caretaker for Ms.Louise, use
to work at Emanuel Hospital as a housekeeper but got fired for stealing blankets,toiletries, and snacks
meant for patients and a co-worker reported her, works a lot and hard to keep a roof over E.J and Jade's
head, she doesn't like Maxine a lot at first but then eventually likes her and even starts to teach her how
to cook. One of Jade's role models.
Jade's first meeting with Women to Women - ANSWER-the first meeting is in a library, Jade takes lots of
refreshments and puts them into her bag to take home to her family, Sabrina ( the founder and director
of Woman to Woman) starts off the meeting by saying an adage, after Sabrina is done with her intro she
says to everyone to get into a circle so they can play the name game but, Jade thinks that this is stupid,
Maxine is still not there so Jade leaves the first Woman to Woman program, Jade is feeling upset after
this meeting since her mentor didn't even show up
Meeting Maxine - ANSWER-Since Maxine didn't show up to the first Woman to Woman meeting she
comes to Jade's house and stands outside in the rain waiting for her to answer the door and let her in,
quickly Jade tidies up everything to let Maxine into the house, Maxine comes into Jade's house with a
gift basket containing all kinds of art supplies and Jade decides to forgive Maxine, Maxine asks Jade
about her art and Jade shows her, her sketchbook, in the middle of this Maxine's phone rings and it is
Jon and Maxine says to Jon that she can't talk because she is at her mentee's house and this offends Jade
because she doesn't want to be referred as Maxine's mentee and just wants to refered to as Jade,
Maxine and Jade get to know each-other, Maxine says that she wants to be a mentor to give back, Jade
realizes that Maxine stood up Jade for her boyfriend Jon which makes her feel very angry
