Description:
Chapter 5 of the eBook discusses how words will change meaning over time. This is, in large part, because language will continue to adapt and evolve in order to meet the needs of the society using it.
For example, the word “mouse” has now become synonymous with a device used with computers. What are some words that have changed meaning due to technological advances in the last 20 years? What impact do these changes have on our thought process?
Answer:
Some of the words that I know have changed over the last 20 years that come to mind are Block, which is in the way but now is used to stop someone from contacting you. Footprints are another I found, and we used to walk and leave footprints in the sand, but now it is used as a trace of an identity of where you have been on the internet. Follow is another you would follow someone to their house or a restaurant, but now follow is a way to watch someone on a social media site. Tag is another one we would look at on an item of clothing to see a price or who made it, but now tag means to link someone on a social media site. The impact that the changes have on our thought process is that technology has slowed our attention span down; we could focus on something for about 15 minutes. It has declined down to 5 minutes attention span due to technology.
