Social media problems:
Depressions, feelings of anxiety, the urge to compete and to perform, physical
problems, addictions, the unhealthy desire for attention. Especially, young
adolescents are enormously sensitive for images they see on social media, and this
can cause several problems. Stalking.
Problems such as attacking the capitol in January 2021. Also, most recently in the
Netherlands someone who killed her half-sister while streaming this online. A small
group of people commit crimes on purpose in order to get likes on social media and
gain popularity.
Posting private information online
For companies’ social media can be negative in case customers write negative
reviews, which can have severe impact on businesses.
Benefits of social media:
Generate a passive income through social media by selling or promoting products.
Social media can be a useful marketing strategy for companies and solo
entrepreneurs in order to sell products and services.
Social media creates a feeling of togetherness and sympathy aswell. Especially in
case of charity and donations. At the beginning of the corona era and during the first
lockdown, there was a strong sense of togetherness and kindness amongst society.
In case of catching criminals, social media can be helpful. For instance, de murder of
George Floyd was filmed and posted on social media. As a result, the police officers
who were responsible for his dead got fired the same day and eventually went to jail.
As was the case for the person who killed her half sister and for the people that
participated in the riots in January 2021 after the evening curfew was settled in the
Netherlands. Due to social media, the perpetrators got arrested on a short term. This
are just a few examples, however, many perpetrators were caught due to help of
social media.
Social media should not be forbidden and banned:
It would not be realistic to close social media. Social media is entrenched in today’s
society and culture. Forbidding social media would come across as a dictature. Plus,
there are more benefits to social media than there are problems.
