o Government policy = linked to labour market forecasts (STEM) and move away from

Before 1800 = ancient
19th century
Beginning of 20th century = red brick
Formed after 1966 = plate glass
Open uni (part-time & distance learners
Post 1992 = new uni’s
o Groups:
Self-made, creating alliance, promoting shared interests
Russel group (24 prestigious, research intensive)
1994 group = established same year as Russel Group. Dissolved in 2013
Post 1992 = million+
Uni alliance
o Some uni’s have more value in the labour market.

o 56.6% female
o 83% UK domiciled

o 12% outside EU
o However, 45% of full-time post grad came from outside EU

o Expansion since 1950s:
1950s – around 3% went to uni. Uni was very elite.
1967 – 14%
1997 – 33%
2017/18 – 50.2% government policies pushed the expansion of HE. Helps attain
social mobility. Uni promotes individual social mobility.
