Stryker Training Study Guide 2023 Questions and Answers
with complete solution
What type of gas is used for laparoscopy and why?
Insufflation = Co2 (Carbon Dioxide). Used because we naturally expel Co2 during the
breathing process.
-pediatric, bariatric, high flow (regular), and vessel harvest
Name the 3 entry methods for delivering Co2.
1. Blind technique (Veress needle)- Small incision made, needle delivered by feel from
Surgeon. Saline or water used through needle to ensure proper placement.
2. Open technique (Hasson cannula)- Surgeon cuts through layers of tissue and
visualizes he has accessed abdominal cavity. Suture is used on both sides of incision to
lock cannula into cavity.
3. Direct View technique- Operating cannula is used with cannulation down the center to
insert laparoscope. Surgeon is viewing his entry.
Measurements:
Flow
Pressure
Flow - LPM = Liters per minute
(How fast the gas is delivered)
-default either 3 or 40)
Pressure - mmHg = Millimeters of Mercury
(How much gas will be delivered)
-safety limit = 15, but bariatric abdominal wall is so thick and heavy that it may be set
higher than 15
Does the insufflator turn off once the pre-set pressure is reached?
No- insufflator does not turn off it just stops delivering gas. Once the actual pressure is
lower then the pre-set pressure the device will deliver gas at the set flow rate.
Sizes of Cannulas
Standard sizes:
Diameter: Measured in millimeters
5mm
10/11mm
12mm
Length: Measured in millimeters
100mm
150mm
, Define:
Obturator
Trocar
Obturator = Dull insertion rod for cannula, sometimes called pencil tip.
Trocar = Sharp insertion rod for cannula.
What must every insufflation tubing have on it?
A Filter
What does the tank yoke do?
Attaches the insufflator line to the gas tank. Special yokes are designed for Co2 tanks
and cannot be interchanged with other gases.
Three warning signs for the insufflator.
1. Occulsion = Something is blocking the flow of the gas being delivered to the
abdomen. Check stopcock on cannula.
2. Overpressure = When the actual gets over the pre-set pressure. Different insufflators
had different limits.
3. Leakage = When the insufflator continuously runs for a pre-determined amount of
time.
Why are insufflators called high-flow?
They can deliver a high amount of gas within one minute. Most insufflators that are
high-flow have a flow rate of 30 to 45 lpm.
Each gas tank can hold...
600L of CO2
What 4 catagories should be used to breakdown laparoscopic instrumentation?
Handles / Shafts:
1. Locking , Non-locking
2. Length - 29cm , 33cm , 45cm
3. Diameter - 3mm , 5mm , 10mm
4. Coated insulation or PEEK shafts
graspers
blunt, round tip
-used to grab and hold onto
