POWER and ROLES within the
family: the division of domestic
labour
Society has changed from rural/agricultural to urban/industrial. This has affected the family in
terms of division of domestic labour.

DIVISION OF DOMESTIC LABOUR'*•.¸ ♡
PARSONS (1955)
The division is based on biological differences

1. INSTRUMENTAL ROLE- the husband is geared towards providing financial resources as
the breadwinner.

2. EXPRESSIVE ROLE- wife geared towards providing warmth, security, emotional support,
primary socialisation of children and meeting emotional needs. She is the homemaker.

POWER and ROLES within the family: the division of domestic labour 1

, -Out of date- most women work now. Willmott & Young argue men participate more in
domestic labour.
-Sexist- feminists are highly critical of this. Women should be free to make their own choices.

BOTT (1957) Joint and segregated conjugal roles
two types of role that take place in the family:

Segregated conjugal- activities that men and women do separately. Work apart from each
other and leisure time too- men watching sport or in the pub.

Joint conjugal- where couples share roles such as some childcare, housework and leisure
time.

-Supporting evidence- Willmott and Young- Bethnal Green- men were breadwinners who played
little part in home life and spent most leisure time in pubs, women stayed at home-
SEGREGATED.
-Out of date- most women work now.

WILLMOTT & YOUNG- the symmetrical family
-they have a march of progress view. Gradually things have improved for all members. Family
life has become more equal, the roles moving from segregated to joint.
-Symmetrical family= nuclear family where men and women’s roles are becoming similar and
balanced, e.g.: both doing paid work, joint role of childcare and housework, spending leisure
time together.

-These are changes due to women’s position at work, geographical mobility, new technology and
higher standards of living.

Overestimated symmetry.
