One reason why the global shift of industry has had negative impacts on some
people in the developed world is due to depopulation. As people begin to move out
of areas, those who remain end up becoming trapped due to various reasons, one
being that homes become worth less than they were bought for due to the area
becoming run down. Also, as there are less people in the area there are less people
to work and as a result places such as shops, schools and workplaces are shut
down, reducing people’s overall quality of life. An example of this is in Detroit,
Michigan, where the population has decreased by around 60%.

Globalisation has had, and is having, major impacts on the environment including
water pollution, biodiversity loss and taking advantage of the world’s resources.
However, communities are implementing some schemes on a local scale in order to
try and reduce the impacts that globalisation has.
One method that can be used on a local scale is transition towns. Transition towns
have the aim of reducing impacts on the environment by promoting locals to become
more self-sufficient by reusing, recycling and sourcing locally where possible. An
example of a transition town is Todmorden, located in the South Pennines. In this
town, much of the food on sale is sourced locally and their IET (Incredible Edible
Todmorden) campaign encourages consumers and growers to work together and
provides regular educational talks within the town to spread awareness of what they
can do to help. This will benefit the environment as sourcing and selling foods locally
helps to reduce food miles, therefore reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Also,
educating people will help make them more aware of the issues and what they can
do to help, encouraging them to take action. However, there are some downsides to
transition towns. Encouraging people to take part may be difficult as some may not
think that they themselves will have a significant impact and therefore may carry on
with their normal routine. Transition towns would also be difficult to place in larger
areas such as London due to a very large area needing to be covered. Also, even if
foods are sourced locally, many people still use cars to travel and therefore
emissions are still produced.
A second method that can be done locally to reduce environmental impacts of
globalisation is ethical shopping. This is when shoppers make a deliberate choice of
products that are better for the environment such as second hand, produced under
fairtrade, organic or cruelty-free items. This will help benefit the environment in
numerous ways. One of these ways is because organic foods will have been grown
