Office Hours: Available to meet via phone, Zoom, email during office hours: Monday and Wednesday,
noon – 2pm. Please email to schedule an appointment outside of these hours.

Typical Response Time:
Every attempt will be made to return all emails and phone calls within 24 hours, Monday through Friday.
Feedback is provided in discussion boards throughout the week and grades are posted within 1-2 days of
the module closure date. Once quizzes/exams close, students are able to review their incorrect answers
with rationales provided. Feedback on written assignments is provided typically within a 2-3 days of the
assignment due date. If students need assistance with assignments, please reach out to me.

Course Information:
This is a 3-credit course that runs from Monday March 20, 2023 to Wednesday May 3, 2023. Therefore,
no assignments will be accepted after Wednesday May 3, 2023. This is a fully online, asynchronous
course requiring approximately 9-12 hours of your time per week.

If students require an adjustment to the assignments to observe a holiday, please let faculty know at
least one week in advance.

Course Description:
This course is designed to explore the role of ethics in healthcare and public policy. Common ethical
problems are discussed and strategies for resolution of ethical dilemmas are applied. This course will
address such topics as end-of-life care, living wills and advanced directives, social networking and media
in Nursing, research with vulnerable populations and genomics. Focus is placed on values clarification,
ethical theory, ethical decision making models, and professional ethical standards. Emphasis is on ethical
obligations of professional nurses in their roles as citizens, members of a profession, providers of care,
and facilitators of public health policy.

Course Student Learning Outcomes:
Upon Completion of this course, the learner will be able to:

1. Apply ethical sensitivity and awareness of personal values via ethics activities.

2. Discuss ethical issues that relate to healthcare and nursing professionals as outlined in the American
Nurses Association (ANA) Code of Ethics.

3. Identify strategies nurses use to solve ethical issues and to impact the development of healthcare
policy.

4. Use an ethical approach when providing leadership via professional and civic activities to advocate for
the improvement of health care within society.

5. Provide resolution(s) to the ethical dilemmas found within the nursing profession that pertain to
disparate populations (i.e. race, class, gender, ethnicity, genetic illness).

6. Refine professional writing skills by completing course assignments that focus on writing instruction
and improvement that receive faculty and peer evaluation and feedback.

7. Characterizes learning as a lifelong process.
