Colonization
Colonization refers to the large-scale population movements where migrants maintain
strong links with their or their ancestors’ former country, gaining significant privileges over
other inhabitants of the territory by such links. When colonization takes place under the
protection of colonial structures, it may be termed settler colonialism. This often involves
the settlers dispossessing indigenous inhabitants, or instituting legal and other structures
which systematically disadvantage them. Colonialized inhabitants often lose their land,
properties and indigenous knowledge. To apply the stages of cultural development in an
African perspective I would:
Make learners aware of different coexisting knowledge system. They should learn
how indigenous cultures have used specific material and processes to satisfy needs
and become aware of indigenous intellectual property rights.
I would teach and uphold the value of the typical African humane feelings in relation
to, and in the practice of technology as a human enterprise.
Allow the learners to develop to greater heights the indigenous technology, whilst
appreciating science behind it and using it more extensively to solve human
problems.
Neocolonization
Culture is the foundation of education, sustainable development, and governance in culture-
based education. It is a teaching strategy and philosophy of education where a student
learning is grounded on the unique values, norms, cultural beliefs, knowledge, practices,
heritage, language, experiences of the community. If cultural values of society are
undermined, forthcoming generation will lose their cultural roots and indigenous
knowledge. To apply the stags of cultural development I would:
Promote greater awareness and encourage strengthening of the African communal
spirit which would, more than before be central issues as scientific and technological
innovations penetrate the fabric of human relationships, potentially leading
otherwise to extreme impersonality.
Decolonization
Decolonization is the undoing of colonialism, the latter being the process whereby a nation
establishes and maintains its domination of foreign territories. During this period
inhabitants started gaining awareness about the value of indigenous knowledge, and it was
incorporated in debates on curriculum policies in education. This was an agitated period and
one of the challenges was to define a criterion or standard to judge which practice and
