Title: The Hobbit (or There and Back Again).
Author: J.R.R. Tolkien.
Edition: paperback edition 1999.
Meaning of the title:
The title of the book is The Hobbit. This is the title because the book is about a
hobbit, Bilbo Baggins. He is the main character and the book follows him in a
great adventure that isn’t usual for hobbits at all.
It’s not strange that the title is The Hobbit because a hobbit isn’t a creature
that’s known by us from other books or however. Hobbits don’t exist in other
books or stories than the ones from J.R.R. Tolkien.
Describing of my favorite episode:
My favorite episode is around chapter 5. Bilbo, the dwarfs and Gandalf were
running to escape from the goblins, when suddenly Bilbo fell on the ground and
then he couldn’t remember anything more.
As Bilbo waked up, it was dark and he was still in the goblin tunnels. There
were no goblins and no dwarves; he was alone… But not really alone, in a
underground dark lake lived Gollum, a small slimy creature with his precious, a
ring.
In the episode Bilbo meets Gollum and finds his ring. When they meet they
have a ‘riddle-battle’. Bilbo wins it by saying: “What have I got in my pocket?”.
The thing he has in his pocket is Gollums ring, but Gollum doesn’t know that.
After Bilbo’s victory he runs away, but Gollum is angry and chases him.
Suddenly, Bilbo disappears, he has put the ring at his finger en becomes
invisible. With the ring he can escape from the goblins and he finds the
dwarves outside.
I like this episode so much because of the battle between Bilbo and Gollum,
and the ring that brings Bilbo so much luck (later the ring will bring more
troubles…). I think the conversation and correlation between Bilbo, the proper
and respectable hobbit, and Gollum, the slimy and false creature, is really
good. The way they speak to each other is funny and truthful and the ending of
their meeting is perfect.
