, Introduction

Unilever is a British-Dutch transnational consumer goods company that ranks among the

world’s largest consumer companies with annual revenues of EUR 50.7 billion in 2019

(Warner, 2019). Unilever manufactures, markets, and distributes personal care products,

cleaning agents, and food items worldwide, with 169,000 employees in 2020 (Warner, 2021).

Unilever has an outstanding track record regarding sustainability and corporate responsibility.

They adopted the Responsible Sourcing strategy, intending to make 100% of plastic packaging

reusable/recyclable/compostable by 2025; currently, 34% has already reached this mark as of

2020 (Warner, 2019). In 2010, Unilever also launched its Sustainable Living Plan, which

prioritises improving health and well-being while simultaneously reducing its environmental

footprint and expanding livelihoods. Besides, Unilever boasts over 400 brands that span

multiple categories and global regions, such as food, beverages, cleaning agents, personal care,

and home care products. Some of its most recognisable brands include Dove, Lipton Tea Bags,

Ben & Jerry’s Ice Creams, and Knorr products - these brands help Unilever reach over 2.5

billion consumers globally through sales across 190 countries and sales outlets (Unilever,

2021). The company markets and distributes its products through direct sales, distributors,

franchises, and retail channels. Retail channels accounted for most of Unilever’s total revenue

in 2019; its largest European market is the UK, while India and China are its primary Asian

markets.
