® RS GCSE – CRIME & PUNISHMENT
Crime & Punishment
4 Mark Qs:

Explain two contrasting beliefs about good and evil (4)
o Xns believe that God gave free will and so everyone has evil nature in them from
birth because of original sin and so because we have free we will can the evil
however Xns believe they have the responsibility to not use it but instead show
compassion and do good in the world
o Bts believe in skillful and unskillful actions rather than good and evil but in the
shrine Bts light candles to show the overcoming of ignorance and good over evil
and the principle of kamma teaches that actions determine future presence and
so Bts prefer to act with skillful action

Explain two similar beliefs about hate crimes (4)
o Xns condemn all hate crimes because God created all humans equal and it
doesn’t show love thy neighbour’
o Hatred is one of the 3 poisons and doesn’t not help a Buddhist to show karuna or
metta and therefore a person who acts out of hatred causes harm to themselves
and others.

Explain two contrasting beliefs about the aims of punishment (4)
o One aim of punishment is retribution. This means getting your own back and
some Xns would think this is a good aim of punishment into making someone not
want to commit further crimes by using the teaching ‘an eye for an eye a life for
a life’ showing whatever crime they commit justice should be done to the same
level. This could mean a murderer is killed
o Buddhists favour reformation as an aim of punishment where they try and
change someone behaviour for the better. They act compassionately and with
respect to try and help criminals who have had a hard way in life or have lost
their footing

Explain two contrasting beliefs about forgiveness (4)
o Xns believe very strongly in forgiveness. Jesus forgave his prosecutors on the cross
and he also said ‘do not forgive 7 times but 77 times’ showing that you should
never stop forgiving people and not to mention it is a line in the Lord’s prayer
o Bts think and recognise forgiveness as important yet still understand it may be
very hard to grant. If a person has greatly suffered the negative emotions may
make forgiveness hard.

Explain two similar beliefs about treatment of criminals (4)
o Xns Treated humanely and fairly – Jesus showed unconditional agape love and
forgave and helped everyone including lepers and tax collectors so they should
do the same
