TERM DEFINITION
Ø Gamete A specialised sec cell, usually a male sperm and a female egg/ovum. They c
the genetic information from the parents
Ø Zygote A single cell formed by fertilisation by the combination of two gametes
Ø Fertilisation When a sperm moves to an egg cell/ovum and the two nuclei fuse together
single zygote
Ø Sexual Sexual involves two types of gametes; mobile male gamete and stationary fe
gamete being produced causing genetic variation-cell division of the zygote
forms all the cells of the new animal
Ø Asexual Asexual uses no specialised gametes and no fertilisation. Instead, cells in one
body divide by mitosis to create a genetic copy of the parent. Good form of
reproduction if the environment is stable otherwise adaptation cannot occur
eliminate the species
Ø Germination The sprouting of a seed – when the plumule and radicle develop
Ø Ovulation The discharge of ovules or ova from the ovary
