Learning objectives HRM Lecture 1
Explain what human resource management is and how it relates to the management process.
Definition of HRM: All planned and controlled activities of an organization to build and maintain
the relation between employees and the organization in order to meet both
business objectives and employee expectations.
4 P’s of HRM:
- polite politest people in the company
- police protectors of company policies and procedures
- partner HR professionals helping the business lines solving their human issues
- player critical role in helping to develop any business strategy
1. Administrative expert: is the HRM process working.
2. Strategic partner: create the goals in a business plan.
3. Change agent: focuses on the human side of the
change process.
4. Employee champion: HRM has to work on the
capacity, motivation and commitment of employees
HRM is more interested in activities than in the outcome of the activities.
Not how you do it but what is the goal/objective of HRM for the organization.
Show with examples why human resource management is important to all managers.
HR professionals must be experts on their company’s industry. Therefore, the HR professionals can
advise the other managers in the company well.
The HR department is a partner, and helps the line managers solving their human issues.
Example: An employee wants a training, but according to the line manager this is not necessary. A HR
professional can mediate in these kinds of situations.
