Friar Lawrence
® The Friar really enables and facilitates most of the action and the
outcomes that happens in the play.
® Although many characters use religious imagery, the Friar is a
representative character of religion. Religion is portrayed as rational
and peaceful but equally the Friar is the cause for the suicides and
that can be arguably down to his selfishness in the sense, he only
married the two in hope of ending the feud and becoming a hero.
This could be Shakespeare representing the dangers to religion if not
kept in check and supported by other scientific beliefs. It could also
show the polluting of religion which occurs when conflict arises.
Elizabethans were very religious and may have interpreted this as a
criticism to them as they are too gullible to believe all this religion
nonsense and they need to be more level headed which may have
caused tension for the audience. It also denotes the unpredictability’s
of religion – it can be good but equally bad and you don’t know
when it will change.
