, READ THE CASE STUDY BELOW AND ANSWER BOTH QUESTIONS THAT FOLLOW.
The Thompson family faces socio-economic strain due to Mrs Thompson low
paying job. She is a single mother to her 12-year-old son, Michael, with his father
working in another province and only visiting during Christmas and the New Year
holidays. While the father does contribute some of his earnings to the family, his
absence most of the time leaves Mrs Thompson as the primary caregiver. The
father also has a criminal record for theft. The family lives in a neighbourhood
with limited resources and high crime rates. As the primary breadwinner, Ms.
Thompson works long hours, leaving Michael unsupervised during after-school
hours. The lack of parental supervision and emotional support, along with limited
opportunities for growth, could potentially expose Michael to risk behaviour.
Additionally, Michael’s grandparents also live with the family. The grandfather
tends to engage in conflict between himself and the grandmother.
QUESTION 1
In your own words, supported with examples and in-text citations of reputable
sources, identify and explain four (4) family variables (as described in the
prescribed book) that can expose Michael to the risk of coming into conflict with
the law. (15)

Based on the case study provided, there are several family variables that
could potentially expose Michael to the risk of coming into conflict with the
law. These variables can be explained using concepts from the field of
criminology and family studies. Here are four family variables that may
contribute to Michael's risk:

1. Parental Supervision and Caregiver Absence: The case study highlights
that Mrs. Thompson works long hours, leaving Michael unsupervised during
after-school hours. Research consistently shows that lack of parental
supervision and involvement is a significant risk factor for delinquency and
involvement in criminal activities among adolescents (Hoeve et al., 2009).
Unscheduled and unsupervised time can increase the likelihood of Michael
engaging in risky behaviors or associating with peers who have deviant
behaviors.
